Eating Clean? Should I or Shouldn’t I? 2

Do you struggle with whether or not you should be eating clean foods? Do you not understand what it means to eat clean?

As strange at it may seem, “clean-eating” means different things to different people. Some people prefer to eat only 90% clean, while others eat 100% clean. Not everyone who eats clean, consumes only organic foods.

But, what is clean eating? Clean eating means that you eat foods in their most natural state, foods that are free of preservatives, or lots of added sugar. Clean eating means you want to avoid foods that have been stripped of their nutritional value or have added chemicals to preserve shelf life. Clean eating means staying away from foods with a high amount of bad fats (some saturated fats and trans fats).  If you can’t pronounce something on the ingredient list, that food is most likely not a clean food. A good rule of thumb would be to stay on the outer edge of your grocery store.

Eating Clean

Is eating clean necessary?

I can only give you my opinion on this. Is it better to eat a clean diet? Of course! Was I eating clean from the day I started my weight loss journey? Absolutely NOT!

I started this weight loss journey 16 months ago and have lost 128 pounds to date. I will say that I ate mostly clean for the first 14 months, but I have always rewarded myself with treats as long as it was within my calorie intake for the day.

A month ago, I decided that I was going to start eating clean. I even gave up all coffee and creamers which was a HUGE for me. I honestly thought I couldn’t live without my coffee everyday. I really thought, in the back of my mind, this is what got me through the day. I was dragging and I would run for the closest Starbucks. Of course, this was only a temporary fix. A few minutes after the coffee had worn off, I had gone from an instant coffee high to completely dragging again.

Well, guess what! I have discovered that I CAN eat completely clean, be free from coffee, the artificial sweeteners, and coffee creamers.

What has this done for me?  Well, between switching my diet to clean foods only, getting rid of the coffee, creamers, artificial sweeteners, all the added sugar, and replacing one meal per day with Shakeology:

  • I no longer have the feeling as if I’m dragging as I try to get through my day
  • I don’t have the same over-stressed feeling I had before constantly
  • I have a TON more positive energy
  • I’m sleeping better at night
  • I am no longer getting frequent dizzy spells as I was before
  • I am not experiencing as much hair loss as before

I know there are other benefits to eating clean, but the above is just a list of what it has done for me in just a few short weeks. Another positive is that I am no longer craving the extra added sugar. I would rather eat foods that are clean and better for me.

It all goes to show that HOW WE FEEL makes a huge impact on HOW WE WANT TO FEEL! If you know your going to eat something and feel miserable or guilty after you’ve eaten it, then why eat it? But, if you know you can eat foods that are good for your body, and your going to feel great after you eat, then why wouldn’t you want to eat it?
